On August 1, 1981, MTV went on the air for the first time.  Showing nothing but music videos (MTV would later become mostly reality TV shows).

The Original VJs (Video Jockeys) were Martha Quinn, Nina Blackwood, Mark Goodman, Alan Hunter and J.J, Jackson.

The first video aired on MTV was The Buggles “Video Killed The Radio Stars”.

Ms. Pac-Man

80s Ms Pac-Man1981 saw the release of the Ms. Pac-Man video game.  It ended up being more popular than the original Pac-Man.



January 20, 1981: Iran released the 52 Americans that were held hostage for 444 days.

March 30, 1981: Assassination attempt made on President Ronald Reagan.  John Hinkley Jr. shot Reagan in the chest as he left the Hilton Washington Hotel.

May 5, 1981: Irish political prisoner Bobby Sands, trying to secure basic human rights for all Irish political prisoners, died after 66 days on hunger strike at H-Blocks of Long Kesh Prison in the Occupied North of Ireland.

May 13, 1981: Pope John Paul II was shot in an assassination attempt by a 23 year old  Turkish man named Mehmet Ali Agca.  The Pope survived the gunshot wounds and Agca was sentenced to life in prison.

September 25, 1981:  Sandra Day O’Connor was sworn in as the first female U.S. Supreme Court Justice.

December 28, 1981: Elizabeth Jordan Carr, America’s first test tube baby was born in Norfolk, Virginia.
